About Lake Bunyonyi, location, depth

Lake Bunyonyi is Uganda’s deepest Lake, and has over 29 small islands including the Akampene/Punishment Island, Njuyeera and Bwama Islands. It is renowned not only for its off-beaten tranquility but also as one of the few lakes that is free of crocodiles, hippos and bilharzia. This makes it an ideal location to visit for swimming excursions. It is situated at an elevation range of 1962m, measuring 25km long and width of 7km and after Lake Tanganyika; it is Africa’s 2nd deepest Lake.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Pick up & drive to Lake Bunyonyi (Kabale)

Pick up at your hotel in Entebbe or Kampala and set off for Lake Bunyonyi in a 4×4 safari vehicle. En route, you will be making a stop visit to the Equator in Kayabwe for photo taking and continue to Igongo cultural centre for a delicious lunch. Continue with a scenic drive as you enjoy the stunning views of Kigezi region, featuring terraced farmlands, breathtaking landscapes, plantations and more. Arrive early and check in at Lake Bunyonyi Rock Resort for relaxation, dinner and a night stay.

Day 2: Canoe ride/community walk & sunset dinner cruise

Enjoy a delicious breakfast and you will embark on the morning canoe ride along Lake Bunyonyi. As you ride, you will be keeping your eyes on amazing birds along the shores and today you will be heading to the punishment island. The interesting birds to search include fish eagles, African kingfishers, black herons, bee-eaters, great cormorants, slender billed baglafetch and more.

Or take a walk to Abaheesi/Batwa communities for a thrilling cultural experience. The cultural walk/community visit includes exploring the unique cultures, traditions, practices and learning how locals make local beer from bananas, enjoying the local dishes/taste the local drink made, listen to the inspirational stories, etc.

Return to the lodge for lunch, relaxation and late in the afternoon, proceed for the sunset dinner cruise. The sunset dinner cruise comes with plenty of snacks, drinks and dinner, then retire for a night stay at Lake Bunyonyi Rock Resort.

Day 3: Return to Entebbe/Kampala

After breakfast, check out of the lodge and you will start driving back to Kampala/Entebbe. En route, have lunch in Igongo and another photography session at the equator and last drop off at Entebbe/Kampala.
