Discover Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

Small but spectacular, Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is one of Uganda’s most treasured natural wonders. Covering about 33.7 square kilometers, it forms part of the greater Virunga Conservation Area, which stretches across Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The park is famous for its endangered mountain gorillas, the playful golden monkeys, and its dramatic volcanic scenery. Three extinct volcanoes  which are Mount Gahinga, Mount Muhabura, and Mount Sabyinyo.    These dominate the landscape, creating a breathtaking backdrop for hiking, photography, and wildlife encounters.

The misty bamboo forests, cool mountain air, and peaceful trails make Mgahinga a place of reflection, wonder, and deep connection with nature.

What Makes Mgahinga Famous

Mgahinga is best known for being “Where Gold Meets Silver” This is a phrase that perfectly captures its magic. The “Gold” represents the rare golden monkeys, while the “Silver” stands for the silverback gorillas that roam its misty slopes.

The park’s unique mix of wildlife, landscape, and culture makes it unlike any other destination in Uganda. It’s the only park where visitors can trek both mountain gorillas and golden monkeys in one day.

Mgahinga is also home to the Batwa community, Uganda’s original forest dwellers, whose rich traditions and knowledge of the forest add cultural depth to every visit. Their stories, dances, and forest walks reveal a side of the wilderness few ever see,  one rooted in heritage, harmony, and survival.

For those seeking solitude, beauty, and authentic adventure, Mgahinga remains a hidden jewel.
