Overview

Take part in the 2 Days Mgahinga gorilla trek and Batwa cultural trail for a lifetime primate encounter guided by Lake Bunyonyi Rock Resort. The 2days tour is your chance to meet face to face with the famous Nyakagyezi, the only gorilla family in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. Unlike in the past years when movements of Nyakagyezi gorilla family were not certain, the gorilla family has now fully settled in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park making it easy for travelers. The family is comprised of over 30 members headed by Mark, the silverback.  The trip also involves the full day batwa cultural trail where travelers are guided into forest to learn the traditions and norms of these indigenous forest people.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Mountain gorilla trekking

This day starts very early! Wake up, have breakfast and depart from Lake Bunyonyi Rock Resort to Mgahinga Gorilla National park, home to the endangered Nyakagezi gorilla family. Assemble at Ntebeko Visitor Information Centre for registration and briefing on the dos and don’ts of gorilla trekking.  At 8:00am, you will hike into the jungle to meet up with Nyakagyezi gorilla family.  Trekking is quite strenuous but worth it. You can spend up to 6 hours in the jungle before meeting the endangered primates depending on the location of gorillas and your hiking speed.  Observe how Mark Silverback guards his entire family while other members play different roles.  The allowed time with the gorillas is strictly an hour counted from the time you set your eyes on the gorillas.  Spend the rest of this evening chilling at Lake Bunyonyi Rock resort on the shores of the lake.

Day 2: Batwa cultural trail

This whole day is for learning and experiencing the traditional forest life of batwa pygmies. After breakfast at the resort, you will drive back to Mgahinga for a memorable batwa cultural trail.  The batwa guides will lead you into Mgahinga forest to experience their traditional forest life. Take part in different activities such as fruit gathering, picking up medicinal herbs, hunting and collecting honey. You will also visit the Ngarama cave where batwa offered sacrifices to their gods. The batwa will also perform their traditional dances and songs to entertain you,. Batwa cultural experience costs $80 which money is given back to the batwa to help them improve their standards of living.  On this cultural tour, also visit local craft shops and, markets to support local businesses.
